Evergreen Nursery

Evergreen Nursery is located in Statham, Georgia. We have been serving clients throughout the SE United States for over thirty years.

Evergreen nursery specializes in cell pack and containerized groundcovers. We began our journey in 1977 as a supplier of bare root groundcovers. In the early '80s, we started transitioning to the production of containerized groundcovers and perennials.

Sensor Research Objectives:

We have set up a four EM50R dataloggers (Decagon Devices) with five EC-5 soil moisture sensors each and one additional datalogger with light, temperature, rain, and humidity sensors to monitor environmental conditions.  All dataloggers are connected to a laptop computer in the nursery’s office, allow easy monitoring of the data.

Our objective is to understand how water content changes in the container substrate between irrigations, and to determine how these dynamics are affected by environmental conditions.  The next step in this research will be to control irrigation based on substrate water content.

Preliminary Data: We have six months of data showing fluctuations in substrate water content.  The use of soil moisture sensors has allowed us to quantify both short- and long-term dynamics in substrate water content.

The sensors responded quickly to irrigation, as can be seen from the rapid increases in substrate water content in the accompanying graph.  Having real-time access to substrate water content information allows us to make better decisions with regard to when, and for how long to irrigate our plants.
