 Economic Assessment

Assessing the cost and effectiveness of any system should provide growers and operators with an objective analysis of the initial cost of the technology, the costs of maintenance and management.

The most important part of this assessment however, is the dollar benefits that this system can provide.  This will obviously vary from situation to situation and from small to large operations.

Additionally, the greatest challenge for many producers with any technological advance is the ease with which that technology can be effectively implemented and used.

This project is using data from our commercial partners to assess the profitability of adopting the new technology, the economies of scale and an analysis of farm characteristics most likely to influence the adoption decision, together with an analysis of the cost-effectiveness of the new technology in reducing water use and nutrient runoff from these operations.

We are also examining the larger environmental (public) benefits of reducing water use and nutrient runoff. We live in an era of increasing urbanization and declining fresh water resources; we need to quantify our impacts on the environment in order to develop more sustainable production systems for the future.
